Joe Lillington

Joe Lillington was born in London and has just returned, following his BA in illustration at Falmouth University. His work has been shown at his Falmouth University degree show, Light Grey Art Lab shows and Just Us collective show in Summer 2014. He was commissioned to design the cover of Stew Magazine and illustrated a short story in AMBIT magazine. Fresh out of university, Ice Age for Flying Eye Books, is his first book.

To find out a little more about his work, we asked Joe the following questions:

What inspires your work?

I’m inspired by stories, real or made up that have a strong sense of place and interesting characters. I like finding the details that can make an illustration believable. I use Museums a lot to influence my work, the history, folklore, old paintings and mosaics.

Tell us a bit about your process…

I usually work quite fast, coming up with a few ideas then moving on to thumbnails to try and get a good composition. I usually draw the whole picture in pencil then colour it digitally.
