Children’s Non-fiction Designer 

Who we are and what we do:

Flying Eye Books is an innovative, award-winning, independent publisher of children’s illustrated books based in East London. We publish a wide range of titles spanning non-fiction, gift, graphic novels, fiction and picture books from a diverse and global base of Authors and Artists. We have always sought to make great design, ground-breaking art and storytelling central to all our books and place a great emphasis on high production values aligned with environmental consciousness.

Who we’re looking for:

This is an exciting opportunity for a graphic designer who will work primarily on nonfiction books as well as a mix of picture books, gift and graphic novels. 

We require a minimum of three years’ experience working with book or print design and a fluent knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. You will have a genuine passion for book design and illustration with a great eye for detail. You will enjoy working in a highly collaborative team of editors and designers. You are highly organised, brimming with creative problem-solving skills, and comfortable communicating and working closely with illustrators. 

Key duties:

  • Design focus on illustrated non-fiction titles for children, but also some picture books, graphic novels and gift books.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Art Director, designers and editors in the creative team. 
  • Taking books from concept through to print ready files.
  • Creating and managing multiple schedules based on book fairs.
  • Designing books with black text and setting up files for co-edition.
  • Briefing and managing artists, providing feedback and guidance, helping to colour correct art, image reference research, check that art and text connect and ensure books meet their deadlines.
  • Working in house 3 days and remote 2 days.

Skills and Essential requirements:

  • 3+ years designing books or relevant print design experience
  • Fluent in the Adobe Creative Suite. Especially InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat and Illustrator
  • Impeccable typography, layout and creative design skills. Proven non-fiction design experience with an impressive portfolio
  • A genuine interest in non-fiction and early-years education
  • Highly organised with excellent communication skills

Full-time position

Competitive salary dependent on experience in range of £28,000 – £30,000
